Taking medicines such as painkillers over a prolonged period of time to relieve headaches can actually make symptoms worse, says NICE. GPs and healthcare professionals should consider 'medication overuse headaches' as a possible cause for worsening symptoms among patients taking painkillers.

NICE has produced a quality standard on antenatal care to help improve the care that women receive during their pregnancy. The standard contains 12 quality statements that describe high-quality, cost-effective aspects of care that should be prioritised to improve the effectiveness, safety and experience of care for pregnant women.

Health and social care professionals can now apply to join NICE's prestigious Fellows and Scholars programme, as it enters its fourth year. The positions, starting in April 2013, are unique opportunities to learn about and get involved in the inner workings of NICE, network with likeminded advocates of evidence-based practice, and promote NICE's guidance and products to colleagues.

New tools to help put NICE guidance into practice

NICE has produced implementation advice for the guidance on spasticity in children and young people. The advice provides practical suggestions for action to help those responsible for planning and implementing the guideline.

 

Also published this month is a podcast on the NICE guideline on neutropenic sepsis. The podcast is useful to anyone who may prescribe prophylactic antibiotics.
