Invitation to apply for the role of professional member on the Managing overweight and obesity in adults PDG
This is a re-advertisment. Individuals who have already applied to be a member of this PDG need not do so again
The Centre for Public Health Excellence leads the development of public health guidance in the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE).
We are currently seeking to recruit professional members for the programme development group (PDG) to develop guidance on Managing overweight and obesity in adults: lifestyle weight management services. PDGs are independent advisory committees which help NICE formulate its public health guidance. This PDG will consider and interpret evidence on effectiveness and cost effectiveness, to enable NICE to produce guidance for commissioners, providers of weight management services, health professionals, local authorities, and other relevant organisations on lifestyle weight management services for adults.
Skills and experience
We are looking for individuals with a specialist or particular interest in weight management for adults, for example behaviour change, dietary management or physical activity. We are particularly interested in applications for membership from:
- Commissioners of services for weight management in adults
- Directors of Public health or other senior public health specialists
- Exercise specialists with particular expertise in overweight and obesity
- Experts in lifestyle weight management in men, low income groups or black and minority ethnic groups
- General practitioners, practice nurses or other health professionals based in primary care and involved in referrals to lifestyle weight management services
- Health economists
PDG members are not asked to represent their employers nor their professional organisations. They are selected for their own expertise and experience.
They should also have experience of multi-professional collaboration at a national or regional level, working with NHS organisations, local authorities, academia, and the wider public, private and voluntary sectors. They should also have previously worked with committees or advisory groups.
Strong interpersonal skills and good verbal and written communication skills are required.
Applicants will ideally have experience of guidance development processes, with an understanding of systematic reviews, critical appraisal methods and the role of health economics.
NICE code of practice: conflicts of interest policy
Appointments will be made in accordance with the NICE code of practice and policy on conflicts of interest. All applicants need to formally declare their interests according to this policy. Applicants with personal pecuniary interests relevant to this guidance that could be regarded as prejudicing their contribution will not be accepted for membership of the Programme Development Group.
Time commitment and conditions
The development phase begins in September 2012 and will continue until November 2013. During this period, CPHE will host an induction meeting and up to 6 PDG meetings which will be held approximately every 2 months from September 2012 until September 2013. The meetings will be a mixture of one and two-day events held in London.
| Date | PDG Meeting | Venue |
| 19 September 2012 | Induction | London |
| 10 October 2012 | PDG 1 | London |
| 21 November 2012 | PDG 2 | London |
| 15 January 2013 | PDG 3 | London |
| 26 and 27 February 2013 | PDG 4 &5 | London |
| 18 September 2013 | PDG 6 | London |
In addition to setting aside time to read papers and prepare for each meeting, PDG members are expected to comment on drafts as they develop throughout the process.
PDG members do not receive any remuneration for their time. However, NICE will pay accommodation, travel and subsistence expenses if required.
Community members
NICE's Patient and Public Involvement Programme (PPIP) is recruiting separately for community members. People working in the voluntary and community sector who are advocates for service user, family or community perspectives may consider applying for community membership rather than professional membership. All members of the PDG have equal status, which reflects the relevance and importance of their different expertise and experience. All PDG members need to attend regular meetings and undertake background reading.
Closing date for applications: 5pm on 30 April 2012
