This clinical guideline offers evidence-based advice on the diagnosis of type 1 diabetes in children, young people and adults. It also covers the care and treatment that should be available in the NHS, including transition to adult care.

Responsibility for undertaking a review of this guidance has passed to the National Clinical Guideline Centre for Acute and Chronic Conditions. The National Collaborating Centre for Chronic Conditions is no longer active.

    Units for reporting HbA1c have changed from % to mmol/mol since this guideline was published. The NICE Pathway on diabetes has been changed to reflect this. The guideline is being updated and the new version (to be published in 2015) will use mmol/mol.
