Information for the public

NICE has said that the Axonics sacral neuromodulation (SNM) system can be used in the NHS to treat overactive bladder.

The system works by using electrical impulses to stimulate the nerves in the pelvic floor and groin area, which helps bladder control. Evidence shows that it improves symptoms of overactive bladder and quality of life.

Axonics SNM system is small and has a longer battery life than the non-rechargeable system currently used in the NHS. So, it should mean less surgery is needed because it will not have to be replaced as often.

Axonics SNM system should only be used in people with refractory overactive bladder, which means when treatment or medicine has not worked.
