Information for the public

NICE has said the PLASMA system can be used in the NHS for bipolar transurethral resection and haemostasis of the prostate.

PLASMA uses electrodes to cut out (resect) prostate tissue and stops any local bleeding afterwards (haemostasis). The electrodes are put into the prostate through the urethra (transurethral).

It should only be used in people with symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia when surgery is suitable.
