Review of NICE Technology Appraisal Guidance No. 59 on the use of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT)

Review Decision - December 2007

Following consultation, the majority of comments received have led to the agreement that the depression indication only of the original guidance No. 59; on the use of electoconvulsive therapy (ECT) be updated within the on-going NICE guideline on the treatment and management of depression in primary and secondary care.

This will leave guidance on the remaining indications (catatonia, prolonged or severe manic episode and schizophrenia) as they currently are. Updates will be undertaken when there is new evidence available likely to alter the recommendations for those indications.

The guidance on depression in No. 59 will remain current up to the point the new guideline on the treatment and management of depression in primary and secondary care is issued to the NHS (anticipated late summer 2009).

The list of static technology appraisal guidance will be updated accordingly.
