Review Proposal - September 2010

Review of NICE Technology Appraisal Guidance No 73; Myocardial perfusion scintigraphy for the diagnosis and management of angina and myocardial infarction

Proposal to update the review into a current ongoing guideline

The planned date for review of the above guidance was June 2010.

This is the date at which the Institute decides whether sufficient new evidence has emerged for the Appraisal Committee to be asked to undertake a full appraisal review.

Recommendation 1.1 of the technology appraisal was reviewed in November 2009 and was updated and replaced by the NICE clinical guideline 95; Chest pain of recent onset: assessment and diagnosis of recent onset chest pain or discomfort of suspected cardiac origin, which was published in March 2010.

Having re-looked at the technology appraisal and the possible scope for updating the guidance, we believe that recommendation 1.2 would be better dealt with within the context of a clinical guideline. Consequently we propose that the original guidance be updated by the on-going NICE guideline on stable angina which is currently due for release to the NHS during July 2011.

  • Recommendation 1.2 of the guidance should be updated, for people who remain symptomatic following myocardial infarction or reperfusion interventions because of their stable angina, in the clinical guideline on stable angina which is currently in development. The current appraisal guidance would stand until the time that the new guideline is issued to the NHS, at this point the technology appraisal will be superseded.
  • Recommendation 1.2, only in as far as it applies to those not included in the scope of the stable angina guideline, should be transferred to the 'static guidance list'.

In order to be completely confident that this is appropriate, we are asking all relevant consultees and commentators, to inform us of any evidence which will help us decide the best way to update this guidance. Please see appendix A for a full list of the organisations we have contacted.
