Clinical Excellence 2001: Working Together was held on Wednesday the 5th and Thursday the 6th of December at the ExCel Centre in London Docklands.

The theme of the conference was WORKING TOGETHER. Delegates received the latest news from the new national bodies such as the Modernisation Agency, as well as updates from established national bodies such as the Commission for Health Improvement and NICE. In addition to a central programme that featured Lord Hunt, Raj Persaud, Roy Lilley and representatives of the NHS. there were three streams,

Working together to:.....

Understand the National Picture
Deliver Locally
Develop NICE Guidance for the NHS

Each stream provided a unique perspective for delegates who are committed to clinical excellence.

Understanding the National Picture offered those interested in developing their understanding of national plans the opportunity to hear from and ask questions of, those charged with the task of modernising the NHS. Speakers included Prof. Louis Appleby and Dr David Colin-Thomé the National Directors for Mental Health and Primary Care, as well as representatives from the National Patient Safety Agency, and the NHS Leadership Centre.

The programme for the Delivering Locally stream aimed to support those who deliver healthcare at the front line and who are responsible for performance management at a local level. Sessions in this stream identified best practice, provided the opportunity to share experiences and learning from colleagues who are also implementing national guidance at a local level and focussed on the importance and challenges of multidisciplinary working.

Developing NICE Guidance for the NHS offered all those who work together to develop the guidance NICE provides to the NHS delegates the opportunity to share and develop their thinking, to learn about current processes and future developments and to test their understanding with perspectives from Europe. There were presentations from those involved in local and international health technology assessment and guideline development, workshops from those in the NHS, patient/carer organisations, healthcare industries & academic organisations, and detailed sessions on developments in the NICE work programme and its processes.

There were over 100 posters presentations forming part of the exhibition, supporting experience and sharing best practice in each of the three streams.
