The first Public Health NICE Question Time is launched in Hampshire

NICE will be holding its first Public Health-focussed Question Time on Wednesday 19 September 2007. The session will take place at The John Pounds Centre, 23 Queen Street, Portsea, Portsmouth, PO1 3HN from 12.15pm to 1.30pm and will include an audience of NHS professionals as well as staff from local authorities, education and the voluntary sector.

In April 2005 NICE took on the role of developing public health guidance. This was the first time that a national guidance-producing body anywhere in the world had been given such a responsibility. NICE’s public health guidance is based on appraisals of evidence about whether measures designed to promote and protect health and prevent disease are effective and cost effective. Our guidance also deals with the broad determinants of health and the degree to which public health measures can help to reduce health inequalities. This new remit of public health for NICE reaches well beyond the National Health Service, with guidance being aimed at people working within schools, environmental health, social care, housing, and transport. Local government and its role in health improvement is at the centre of NICE’s approach to public health.

NICE Question Time - Hampshire will showcase our public health work and provide the opportunity for you to question a panel on the implementation of our guidance. Professor Mike Kelly, Director for the Centre for Public Health Excellence at NICE, will give a brief presentation and then sit on a panel with members of the board and invited guest, Dr Paul Edmondson-Jones, the Director of Public Health & Well-being for Portsmouth City.

The Question Time session will be followed at 2.00pm by the Institute’s Board meeting. This is a public Board meeting with questions taken from the floor after each item. The meeting will also take place at The John Pounds Centre in Portsmouth.
