NICE is to develop a comprehensive education strategy to incorporate its guidance into the educational framework of healthcare professionals at all levels. As a first step towards this, the Institute has appointed Dr Kamran Siddiqi as its Education Adviser. The new strategy is due to be published in December 2007 and will provide direction for the Institute in this area.
NICE identifies the cost impact of implementing the clinical guideline on secondary prevention for patients following a myocardial infarction
The NICE guideline 'Secondary prevention in primary and secondary care for patients following a myocardial infarction' was published in May, and the Costing Team have also published costing tools. The recommendations considered to have the most significant impact on resources were omega-3-acid ethyl esters treatment, treatment with an aldesterone antagonist, cardiac rehab with an exercise component, including methods to increase uptake of such programmes, and cardiological assessment to consider whether revascularisation is appropriate.
