Using NICE guidance to promote health and wellbeing for people working with local communities

During 2007 we have been introducing NICE guidance and our forward programme of public health guidance to senior managers in local authorities across England.

For many youth and community workers, social care commissioners, leisure providers and planners NICE guidance could provide a useful source of evidence-based information addressing questions such as How can we use open space to encourage healthier living? How can we work together to tackle child obesity and underage drinking? How can we make sure our joint working with older people provides the best value?

A new leaflet, Using NICE guidance to promote health and wellbeing, was produced by gathering examples of how people working with local communities had used NICE guidance in their work, and through partnerships with The Centre for Public Scrutiny, the Improvement and Development Agency, and the Social Care Institute for Excellence - organisations already experienced in providing advice and support to local authorities. It identifies how strategic leaders, managers, commissioners and contracting officers, elected councillors, and the wider public can benefit from reading the guidance and the accompanying implementation tools. We are planning to publish a further document which signposts NICE guidance relevant to the four themes within Local Area Agreements.

To distribute through your teams, networks or partnership groups you can order copies by calling 0870 155 5455 or emailing nice@prolog.uk.com

To provide feedback on the leaflet, further ideas for dissemination, or for information relevant to Local Area Agreements please contact Val.moore@nice.org.uk or your local NICE Implementation Consultant listed in the ‘Local face of NICE’ section of the leaflet
