2007/060 NICE issues guidance on ezetimibe for primary hypercholesterolaemia
The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) has today issued guidance recommending the use of ezetimibe for the treatment of primary (heterozygous-familial and non-familial) hypercholesterolaemia.
NICE has recommended that:
- Ezetimibe can be taken on its own by people with primary hypercholesterolaemia who would normally be given a statin to treat their condition but who are unable to take a statin because of contraindications to initial statin therapy or because they are intolerant to statins.
- Ezetimibe, co-administered with initial statin therapy, is an option for people with primary hypercholesterolaemia where cholesterol is not appropriately controlled either after the dose of initial statin has been increased, or where such an increase is limited by intolerance to the initial statin therapy.
