Healthy diet and exercise key to reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes

 
 

Simple lifestyle changes, such as increasing physical activity or eating more healthily, can prevent or delay type 2 diabetes, says NICE. Nearly 3 million people have diabetes in the UK. The latest guidance recommends testing for either fasting blood glucose levels or HbA1c levels.

Dementia 'not being diagnosed'

Fewer than half of people with dementia ever receive a formal diagnosis, according to the All Parliamentary Group on Dementia. Early diagnosis of dementia can help both individuals with the condition and their families in planning for their future. The NICE Pathway on dementia says that memory assessment services should be the single point of referral for people with dementia.

As London counts down to the 2012 Olympics, experts call for more to be done to encourage people to be physically active. They recommend a population approach, incorporating government, education and town planning as well as health, to encourage people to do more physical activity.
