NICE has issued final guidance recommending the use of a simple test to help clinicians in the diagnosis and management of asthma. People with asthma often have inflamed lungs and breathe out higher levels of nitric oxide. In the new guidance, NICE recommends 3 devices to measure the levels of nitric oxide a person is breathing out. They are NIOX MINO and NIOX VERO (Aerocrine), and NObreath (Bedfont Scientific Ltd).

New NICE medical technologies guidance published today (16 January), supports the use of a device that can detect atrial fibrillation whilst blood pressure is being measured. Using WatchBP Home A in the NHS for opportunistically detecting asymptomatic atrial fibrillation during the measurement of blood pressure by primary care professionals, is backed by the NICE guidance. The recommendations note that using WatchBP Home A could increase the detection rate of atrial fibrillation, which would allow preventative treatment to be given to reduce the incidence of atrial fibrillation-related stroke.

NICE, the healthcare guidance body, has today (27 July) published its final guidance on the use of a device which delivers  photodynamic therapy (PDT) to treat non-melanoma skin cancer in a way that allows patients to walk around freely whilst the treatment is given.  In the context of achieving a more efficient non-melanoma treatment service, more evidence is needed to support the case for routine use of Ambulight PDT. However this outcome does not mean that Ambulight PDT should not be used; it remains one of a range of potential options on offer for treating non-melanoma skin cancer whilst the evidence base is developed further.

The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) has issued a consultation draft on the use of golimumab for the treatment of psoriatic arthritis.  The evidence considered suggests that golimumab is not as effective as a treatment (etanercept) currently recommended by NICE for this condition.  Based on this evidence, the independent appraisal committee is unable to recommend golimumab for the treatment of active and progressive psoriatic arthritis in adults when the response to previous disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug therapy has been inadequate.
