PRESS RELEASE APPOINTMENT OF PLANNING AND RESOURCE DIRECTOR FOR NATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR CLINICAL EXCELLENCE

Andrew Dillon, Chief Executive of the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE), today announced the appointment of Andrew Sutcliffe as Planning and Resource Director.

Ms Sutcliffe is a history graduate from the London School of Economics and a qualified CIPFA (Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy) Accountant. She is currently Assistant Director, Performance Management and Resources for the Social Services Department, London Borough of Camden and has 13 years experience working in the NHS in finance, contracting and general management. Most recently managing Children, Women and Neurosciences services for St George's Healthcare NHS Trust.

Ms Sutcliffe will take up her position with NICE on 6 November 2000.

Mr. Dillon said: "I am very pleased Andrea will be joining the Board of the Institute. She brings considerable knowledge and experience of operational management in health and social care as well as finance and strategic planning and will be a valuable member of the senior management team and the Board."

Notes to Editors

1. Ms Sutcliffe has a proven track record in operational management, strategic planning, service development and inter-agency working. She is a qualified accountant with excellent project management, negotiation and communication skills.

2. Ms Sutcliffe will be directly responsible to the Chief Executive. She will act as the chief financial officer and will work with the senior management team and the Board to co-ordinate the planning of the Institute's work programme. As a member of the Board she will also take on a range of Board level responsibilities and play a full role in the corporate management of NICE.

3. Ms Sutcliffe's appointment is a new role for the Institute. Prior to her appointment Mr. Richard Jefferies was employed as Acting Finance Director on a part-time secondment from the South East Region of the NHS Executive

4. The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) was set up as a special Health Authority on 1st April 1999, chaired by Professor Sir Michael Rawlins. Its objectives are to promote high clinical standards in the NHS by:

  • Developing or commissioning guidance on clinical and cost effectiveness,
  • Disseminating this guidance to clinicians, patients and commissioners. [ENDS]
