2001/30 NICE Board considers its response to the Kennedy Report (Bristol Enquiry)

NICE 2001/ 030
Issued: 19 September 2001

Press Statement - Reactive

The Bristol Royal Infirmary Inquiry Report, also known as the Kennedy Report, was published on 18 July 2001. On the same day Alan Milburn, Secretary of State for Health, announced that he would welcome views from the public and the NHS to inform the Government's response.

The report makes a number of recommendations regarding the Institute and its future work. The Institute will be submitting its views to both the Department of Health and the National Assembly for Wales following its final discussions on this topic at the Institute's Public Board meeting on the 19 September 2001.

Andrew Dillon, Chief Executive of NICE said, "This is a report of fundamental importance to the NHS. It describes failures in the arrangements for securing the high standard of care which those who rely on the NHS reasonably expect. It makes recommendations for change and improvement, which will affect everyone involved in the health service.

The Institute is committed to playing a full part in achieving the goals set out in the Report. We have considered carefully each of the recommendations as they apply to NICE and we have consulted with our Partners Council on how to respond to them. Our full response will be submitted to the Department of Health and will be published on our web site shortly."
