Board Approves New Appraisal Guidance

The NICE Board approved documents at its meeting on 6 February which will replace the existing Interim Guidance for Manufacturers and Sponsors, which describes the process, methodology and requirements for manufacturer and sponsor submissions to the Institute's technology appraisals. Along with other documents which will provide advice to patient and professional organisations, this new suite of guidance, which will be published later this month, will offer comprehensive guidance to those involved in the appraisal programme.

As part of the new process, the Board has confirmed its decision to publish provisional and final appraisal determinations on the Institute's web site. Formal consultees will receive these documents 5 working days in advance of their publication. In order to underscore its status as work in progress, the provisional appraisal determination will be retiled and its format reviewed. Comments received by the Institute from individuals and organisations outside of the official group of consultees (relevant manufacturers or sponsors, nationally based patient and professional groups and the Department of Health and the National Assembly for Wales), will be taken into account. The precise way in which this will happen will be determined by the Institute over the coming months.
