NICE appoints Guidelines Programme Director

The National Institute for Clinical Excellence has appointed Dr Gillian Leng to lead its Clinical Guidelines Programme.

The Guideline Programme Director is responsible for planning and delivering the Institute's Clinical Guidelines work programme.

Dr Leng joins the Institute from Bedfordshire Health Authority where she is a consultant in public health medicine with responsibility for implementing clinical governance and national service frameworks. Dr Leng is also editor of the Cochrane Review Group on peripheral vascular diseases and an honorary senior lecturer at University College London. She will take up her position with NICE on 6th August 2001.

She is a highly qualified professional with direct experience of clinical guidelines and the implementation of NICE guidance. She will bring to the Institute the benefit both of her clinical and managerial expertise and her knowledge of implementation ".

Notes for editors

1. After a first degree in physiology, Dr Leng qualified in medicine and later specialised in public health medicine. In addition to her current position she has held academic and NHS posts including a research fellowship at the Wolfson Unit for Prevention of Peripheral Vascular Disease in the University of Edinburgh, and obtained an MD degree from Leeds University.

2. The Guidelines Programme Director is responsible for planning, and delivering a programme of up to 25 new and review clinical guidelines each year.

3. Leading a team of commissioners and administrative support staff, she will commission and quality control guidelines, work closely with the Collaborating Centres and the Guideline Advisory Committee and liaise with external stakeholders.

4. The Guidelines Programme Director is a member of the Institute's Senior Management Team, she will work closely with the Board and will contribute to the development of policy and practice across the organisation.

5. The Guidelines Programme Director will represent the Institute at UK and international meetings.
