2002/012 NICE welcomes announcement of consultation on the timing and selection of topics for NICE appraisal

NICE 2001/012
Issue Date: 05 March 2002

Press statement

The Department of Health has announced a three-month consultation period seeking views on proposed changes to the way in which the Department of Health and the National Assembly for Wales select appraisal topics for referral to the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE).

Andrew Dillon, NICE Chief Executive, comments: "NICE welcomes this consultation. We are keen for our work programme to be constructed in a more open and inclusive manner, and in particular to offer more opportunities for NHS staff - who are often the best judges of where the need for guidance is greatest - to propose appraisal topics."

"The Institute will consider its response to the consultation paper at its Board meeting on 15 May. I hope that others who are interested in how our capacity is used will take advantage of this opportunity to express their views."

Notes for Editors:

  1. The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE or 'the Institute') is part of the NHS and its role is to provide authoritative and reliable guidance on healthcare for patients and their carers, healthcare professionals and the wider public in England and Wales.
  2. The Institute produces three key guidance products for the NHS: technology appraisals, which assess the clinical and cost effectiveness of technologies, clinical guidelines and clinical audit advice. Technologies can be medicines, medical devices, diagnostic techniques, surgical procedures and health promotions.
  3. Topics for the Institute's work programme are referred to the Institute by the Department of Health and the National Assembly for Wales.
  4. Once the work programme has been agreed, the development of the subsequent advice is entirely the responsibility of NICE.
  5. The Institute holds all its formal Board meetings in public, in towns and cities across England and Wales. The agenda and papers for each meeting are published on the NICE website. The Board will consider its response to the consultation paper at its meeting on 15 May 2002 at the Jarvis International Hotel in Swansea.
