Stakeholder registration
Stakeholder organisations are encouraged to register their interest soon after a new guideline topic is published. However, stakeholder organisations can register throughout the development process and contribute from that point onward.
In the NICE clinical guideline development process, stakeholders are:
- national patient and carer organisations that directly or indirectly represent the interests of people whose care is covered by the guideline (‘patient and carer stakeholders')
- national organisations that represent the healthcare professionals who provide the services described in the guideline (‘professional stakeholders')
- companies that manufacture the medicines or devices used in the clinical area covered by the guideline and whose interests may be significantly affected by the guideline (‘commercial stakeholders')
- providers and commissioners of health services in England, Wales and Northern Ireland
- statutory organisations including the Department of Health, the Welsh Assembly Government, NHS Quality Improvement Scotland, the Healthcare Commission and the National Patient Safety Agency
- research organisations that have done nationally recognised research in the area.
National organisations
As NICE clinical guidelines are produced for the NHS in England and Wales, a 'national' organisation is defined as one that represents either of these countries.
For practical reasons, local patient/carer and professional groups cannot register as stakeholders, and nor can individuals. However, they are encouraged to participate through an appropriate registered stakeholder. The registered stakeholders for each guideline are shown on the guideline summary pages.
These pages do not list the names of individuals within each Stakeholder organisation. If you wish to obtain the contact name/details for the named individual within a particular stakeholder organisation please email us at guidelines@nice.org.uk and we will seek the individual's permission to release their details to you.
How to become a stakeholder
Finding out about clinical guideline topics
NICE cannot guarantee to notify all organisations that may have an interest in a guideline topic. Potential stakeholders are strongly encouraged to check regularly the list of guidelines in development.
NICE produces a monthly e-newsletter that gives details of forthcoming guidance, consultations on guidance in progress, and future events. Subscribe to the e-newsletter.
Registering an interest
To register an interest in a particular guideline topic, potential stakeholders should complete a stakeholder interest form (below). The form asks potential stakeholders to:
- describe their organisation
- indicate who the organisation represents
- outline the contribution the organisation can make to the guideline
- provide contact details for a principal contact
Submitting a stakeholder interest form
Please complete and submit your form via stakeholder registration form.
NICE will confirm that an organisation has been accepted as a stakeholder. If an organisation does not appear to fit the definition of a stakeholder, registration will not be accepted. Individuals are not accepted as stakeholders.
If you have not received a confirmation within 28 days, contact a member of the NICE guidelines team.
