NICE implementation uptake & commissioned reports
The NICE Implementation Directorate will produce in-house implementation uptake reports to assess the level of compliance with guidance across the NHS. NICE has also previously commissioned a number of external reports and surveys on the uptake of guidance.
The NICE implementation uptake reports will be based on the analysis of data that is available at a national level from a number of sources including:
- ePACT: the Prescribing Analysis and Cost Tool system which covers prescriptions prescribed in primary care in England
- FP10(HP): information covering prescriptions written in hospitals intended for dispensing in the community
- IMS HPAI: the IMS Health Hospital Pharmacy Audit Index (IMS HPAI) database which covers issues of medicines recorded on hospital pharmacy systems in the UK.
- HES: the Hospital Episodes Statistics national datawarehouse provides a range of information on the care provided by NHS hospitals in England and for NHS hospital patients treated elsewhere
Details of the methods used will be included in each implementation uptake report. Each report will aim to examine trends in the use of a drug, procedure or technology recommended in NICE guidance. In some cases additional analysis will be presented that estimates the uptake in line with assumptions based on the NICE recommendations.
The extent of the in-house reports may be limited by the data available. These limitations will vary depending on the information available and the guidance under consideration. The limitations and data sources will be detailed in each report.
