How to put NICE guidance into practice: a guide to implementation

This interim guide aims to help NHS provider organisations implement National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidance.

This guide is not prescriptive, but gives organisations advice that they may find useful when developing or reviewing their systems for implementing NICE guidance. It is based on relevant literature and the experience of other organisations and includes:

1. A rationale as to why organisations should work to implement NICE guidance.

This section introduces the benefits of implementation and sets NICE Quality Standards and NHS Evidence within the context of other NICE guidance.

2. The principles that should be considered when developing systems to implement guidance.

This section highlights the key principles that have been shown to be important for implementation and discusses:

  • board support and clear leadership;
  • provision of a resource (a NICE manager);
  • support from a multidisciplinary team;
  • systematic approach to financial planning; - a systematic approach to implementing guidance and
  • a process to evaluate uptake and feedback.

3. Practical steps and support.

This section highlights the steps that organisations can take to facilitate implementation and the support and resources that NICE provide to help with this.

The original version of this guide has been removed from circulation and archived due to references to national organisations that are now out of date. A full update is now due to be published in 2012.
