How to put NICE guidance into practice

This guide aims to help organisations

  • implement NICE guidance and other national policy
  • comply with core and developmental standards set in Standards for better health
  • meet the Healthcare Commission’s expectations

This guide is split into three parts – the first two focus on organisations directly responsible for implementation, and the third focuses on commissioning organisations.

  • Part 1 is for chief executives and directors with overall responsibility for implementation. It outlines the principles of implementation.
  • Part 2 is for people who implement guidance as part of their day-to-day practice. It has practical steps with examples, action points and ideas.
  • Part 3 is for commissioners. It provides practical information on how they can ensure the services they receive are in line with NICE guidance.

The guide is based on our work with NHS organisations across the country, feedback received from workshops, and published literature. A list of organisations and individuals who contributed to the development of this guide is available below.

Please note that the job descriptions, processes and action plans have not been through our shared learning quality assurance process.
