Using NICE guidance to prevent unintentional injuries
Accidents just happen - don't they? In fact, most unintentional injuries and their causes are predictable and preventable, but tragically, unintentional injury is a leading cause of death and injury for children and young people.
NICE has produced a suite of guidance and tools that make recommendations for action at national and local levels which will reinforce and support good practice in preventing unintentional injuries.

NICE support tools
NICE offer a range of support tools to help local authority multi-agency partnerships put this guidance into practice
- Slide set- a power point presentation that you can customise with local information and use for awareness and learning
- A self assessment tool for each piece of guidance: road design, in the home, strategies - excel spreadsheets that you can use to assess current practice and plan actions needed
- Costing tool - this report and excel template can be used to assess the cost and savings of implementing NICE recommendations and to build a case for investment
- Key facts for local councillors: making the case for investment tool - this will help those working in local authorities put NICE's recommendations into practice. It is aimed at councillors and their officers and has been produced by Local Government Improvement and Development in partnership with NICE. It includes a key facts template that can be adapted to local circumstances.
- Ten questions to ask if you are scrutinising local action on preventing unintentional injuries in u15s - this has been produced by the Centre for Public Scrutiny in partnership with NICE. It provides a Q&A framework for members of overview and scrutiny committees and their officers, based on the NICE guidance. It also provides information on how OSCs should prepare for scrutiny, and who to invite as witnesses.
Events
NICE is working in partnership with RoSPA and the Child Accident Prevention Trust to promote awareness of the guidance at conferences and in a series of ‘Making the Link' workshops.
