Paton C et al (2010) Lithium in bipolar and other affective disorders: prescribing practice in the UK Journal of Psychopharmacology 24 (12)

Description: Data were collected during a baseline clinical audit of the quality of lithium monitoring, conducted by the Prescribing Observatory for Mental Health. 35 NHS Trusts submitted data for 2776 patients with a diagnosis of affective illness. Co-prescribing was found to be common, 57% of bipolar patients were prescribed an antipsychotic and 77% of those with other affective disorders, an antidepressent.

Atturu, H. et al (2013) Breaking bad news - a valproate reaudit European Neuropsychopharmacology 2013; 23 S368-S369

Description: This audit assessed current practice in respect of valproate prescribing for bipolar disorder in women of childbearing age (under 46 years old) between August 2005 and October 2012 at Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust. Prescribing data for 23 patients showed clinical discussion was carried out during initiation of valproate with 35% of patients and during follow up for 22% of patients.
