The alcohol use return on investment tool has been developed to help decision making on interventions and strategies to prevent and reduce alcohol use at local and sub-national levels.

The tool enables the user to evaluate a portfolio of interventions in their geographical area (e.g. region, county or local authority) and models the economic returns that can be expected in different payback timescales. The different interventions included in the tool can be mixed and matched to see which intervention portfolio or package provides the best 'value for money', compared with 'no package of interventions' or any other specified package.

The tool is accompanied by a package of support materials, including a user guide and technical report, and can be downloaded using the links on this page. We have also published an alcohol effect size calculator for this tool. This calculator uses the mean reduction in alcohol units and standard deviation associated with an intervention and control to calculate the impact – effect size – of the intervention. This can be used for custom interventions and local data. Instructions for its use is found in Appendix 4 of the alcohol user guide

This site contains the most up-to-date tool, so please ensure that you are using the latest version. The most recent version is version 1- check this page regularly to ensure the tool you have downloaded is up to date.
