Highly specialised technologies 

  • Horizon scanning and topic selection

    Approximately 20 months before marketing authorisation (MA).

  • Company notified of progression to scoping

    We let companies know that their technology has progressed to our scoping stage and direct them to early information on our charging.

  • Decision point 3

    Decision on technology appraisal (TA)/highly specialised technologies (HST) routing to scope consultation.

  • Draft scope consultation

  • Decision point 4

    Decision on TA/HST routing and whether a referral should be sought from the Secretary of State.

  • Formal referral request submitted

  • Formal referral received from Secretary of State

  • Reference request sent to company

    Unique reference request sent to company - approximately 3 months before the invitation to participate (ITP). Confirmation required that the company will participate in the evaluation before the ITP is issued. 

    Our usual invoice terms will apply - payment expected within 30 days of receipt of invoice.

  • Invitation to participate (ITP)

  • Evaluation paused if payment not received

    Evaluation paused if payment is not received in full by the deadline for the evidence submission.


Small companies

The above stages also apply to small companies. Timings are approximate.

  • Unique reference request sent to company (40% of charge due)

    Unique reference request sent to company  - approximately 3 months before the invitation to participate (ITP). Confirmation required that the company will participate in the evaluation before the ITP is issued. 

    The company is required to pay an initial 40% of the charge on receipt of invoice.

    Our usual invoice terms will apply - payment expected within 30 days of receipt of invoice.

  • Invitation to participate (ITP) (0 days)

  • Evidence submission (60 days)

  • Evaluation paused if payment not received

    Evaluation paused if initial 40% payment is not received by the deadline for the evidence submission.

  • Evidence review (60 days)

  • Committee preparation (30 days)

  • Payment required (50% of charge)

    Company to pay a further 50% of the charge before the circulation of the agenda for the first committee meeting discussing the technology.

  • Appraisal committee meeting

  • Draft guidance issued

  • Final payment required (10% of charge)

    Company to pay the final 10% of the charge before the publication of the HST (final guidance).

  • Evaluation paused if payment not received

    Evaluation paused before the final guidance is issued if payment not received in full from the company.
