Current evidence on the safety and efficacy of insertion of an epiretinal prosthesis for retinitis pigmentosa is limited in quality and quantity. Therefore, this procedure should only be used in the context of research.


NICE encourages further research on this technology. Outcomes should include the impact on quality of life and activities of day‑to‑day living, and durability of implants. NICE may update the guidance on publication of further evidence.
