Minor changes since publication

February 2023: We have reinstated our prescribing guidance for children and young people, because the December 2022 NHSE interim guidance on group A streptococcus that replaced it has been withdrawn. See Group A Streptococcus: withdrawal of NHSE interim guidance.

December 2022: In response to increased notifications of scarlet fever and invasive group A streptococcus (iGAS) disease in children and young people, this guideline now only applies to adults. We have removed the prescribing table for children and young people under 18 years. See NHSE/UKHSA interim guidance on Group A Streptococcus for children.

January 2022: We made minor wording changes to reflect updated advice on the use of macrolides in pregnancy.

May 2021: In recommendation 1.1.12 we clarified that people who are at high risk of serious illness should be offered an immediate antibiotic.

January 2020: We added a note to the prescribing tables to clarify the duration of prescribing for phenoxymethylpenicillin.
