This quality standard covers care for people with dementia provided by health and social care staff in hospital, community and specialist care settings. It includes diagnosis, assessment and care planning, and respite services for carers of people with dementia. It describes high-quality care in priority areas for improvement.

It does not cover supporting people with dementia to live well and maintain their independence, which is covered in NICE’s quality standard for dementia: independence and wellbeing.

Keeping quality standards up to date

We checked this quality standard in 2016. The source guidance on supporting people with dementia is currently being updated and we are assessing what changes will need to be made to the quality standard.
