This quality standard covers diagnosing and treating venous thromboembolism (VTE) in adults. VTE includes deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism. It describes high-quality care in priority areas for improvement.
It does not cover prevention of VTE or diagnosis and treatment of VTE in pregnant women.
NICE has also published a quality standard on reducing the risk of VTE for adults in hospital.
In April 2016, changes were made to this quality standard to reflect the updated NICE guidance on venous thromboembolic diseases. Statement 4, on mechanical interventions (compression stockings) for deep vein thrombosis, was removed because the statement was out of date.
Keeping quality standards up to date
We checked this quality standard in 2016 and it is still up to date.
