This quality standard covers supporting people with dementia to live well and maintain their independence. It is for all social care settings and services working with and caring for people with dementia or suspected dementia. It describes high-quality care in priority areas for improvement.

It does not cover care provided by health and social care staff in direct contact with people with dementia, which is covered in NICE’s quality standard for dementia: support in health and social care.

Keeping quality standards up to date

We checked this quality standard in 2017. Minor changes were made in 2018 to align the quality standard with the updated NICE guidance on dementia.

NICE will review and update this quality standard to fully reflect the changes to the NICE guideline on dementia. Until then, continue to use this quality standard, which is still supported by the updated guideline.
