Raising sensitive issues - a training package for maternity settings

This training package is designed to help trainers develop training for staff (such as midwives, health visitors and social workers) to develop their skills in raising sensitive issues with pregnant women. It is designed to support the implementation of NICE guidance in maternity care with particular reference to CG110 Pregnancy and Complex Social Factors. It is also intended to have wider applicability to NICE guidance which requires health and social care professionals to raise sensitive issues.

While primarily aimed at trainers, the package contains elements that can be used by individuals to support their own continuous professional development.

The resources were developed in collaboration with the University of Leeds, building on their innovative and validated work in the area of domestic abuse.

The package consists of:

  • A training plan which explains how to use the resources and contains templates for handouts and practical advice on organising a full training session for 3 hours.
  • PowerPoint slides which are designed to be used by the trainer in the session as explained in the training plan.
  • Video clips - the use of which is explained in the training plan. They are designed to be used by the trainer and the simulated patients to plan their sessions.

For further information read the background information on the development of this resource.
