NICE has been notified about this procedure and it is part of its work programme. The Interventional Procedures Advisory Committee (IPAC) will consider this procedure and NICE will issue an interventional procedures consultation document about its safety and efficacy for 4 weeks’ public consultation. IPAC will then review the consultation document in the light of comments received and produce a final interventional procedures document, which will be considered by NICE before guidance is issued to the NHS in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Description In this procedure, a temperature management device is used to maintain the patient’s core temperature within normal limits. Either surface techniques (for example heat exchange cooling pads) or internal techniques (for example an endovascular cooling device) may be used. Heat is exchanged between the patient and the device to allow the body temperature to be controlled to a pre-set point determined by the clinician. This procedure aims to reduce brain injury and improve neurological outcomes following stroke or SAH by maintaining normothermia.
