October 2025 exceptional surveillance of dementia: assessment, management and support for people living with dementia and their carers (NICE guideline NG97)

In October 2025, we reviewed the topic areas of sleep (with a specific focus on melatonin), young onset dementia (YOD), mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and initial assessment in primary care.

The following areas were also initially considered but no relevant evidence was found, thus they were not considered further: pre-, peri-, and post-diagnosis counselling, case finding and post-diagnosis review.

Surveillance decision

We will not update the recommendations as the new evidence identified was not sufficient to impact the guideline at this time. However, we are tracking a number of promising ongoing studies, so that their results can be assessed for impact on the guideline once published.
