This quality standard covers care for people with dementia provided by health and social care staff in hospital, community and specialist care settings. It includes diagnosis, assessment and care planning, and respite services for carers of people with dementia. It describes high-quality care in priority areas for improvement.

It does not cover supporting people with dementia to live well and maintain their independence, which is covered in NICE’s quality standard on dementia: independence and wellbeing.

Keeping quality standards up to date

We checked this quality standard in 2017. Minor changes were made in 2018 to align the quality standard with the updated NICE guidance on dementia.

NICE will review and update this quality standard to fully reflect the changes to the NICE guideline on dementia. Until then, continue to use this quality standard, which is still supported by the updated guideline.
