This quality standard covers supporting people with dementia to live well and maintain their independence. It is for all social care settings and services working with and caring for people with dementia or suspected dementia. It describes high-quality care in priority areas for improvement.

It does not cover care provided by health and social care staff in direct contact with people with dementia, which is covered in NICE’s quality standard for dementia: support in health and social care.

This quality standard was previously called the quality standard for supporting people to live well with dementia.

Keeping quality standards up to date

We checked this quality standard in 2016. The source guidance on supporting people with dementia is currently being updated and we are assessing what changes will need to be made to the quality standard.
