This quality standard covers care and treatment for adults with diabetes. It includes preventing type 2 diabetes, managing type 1 and type 2 diabetes, diabetes-related foot care and diabetes education programmes. It describes high-quality care in priority areas for improvement.
It does not cover managing diabetes in women planning or during pregnancy, which is covered in NICE’s quality standard on diabetes in pregnancy.
NICE has also published a quality standard on diabetes in children and young people.
In August 2016, this quality standard was updated in response to an annual review, which identified changes in the areas for improvement for diabetes in adults. For more information see update information.
How to use NICE quality standards and how we develop them
Quality standards help you improve the quality of care you provide or commission. They apply in England and Wales (see the UK government website and Welsh government website). Decisions on how they apply in Scotland and Northern Ireland are made by ministers in the Scottish government and Northern Ireland Executive.
