The Committee decided that further work by the Institute would be required before it could issue a recommendation to the NHS. The Committee appreciated the advantages of Intrabeam, especially for people who are keen to avoid having external beam radiotherapy, but was also concerned about the remaining uncertainties in the evidence, and the difficulties these present for both patients and clinicians in making an informed choice about the best treatment. The technology appraisals team is exploring options for evidence development that could be used to support the use of Intrabeam intraoperative radiotherapy in the NHS. Consequently the timeline for the development of the provisional guidance has been extended.
