Do you have an example of good practice that has helped improve quality and productivity across the NHS and social care?
The Quality, Innovation, Productivity and Prevention (QIPP) collection is a resource to share examples of successful good ideas with colleagues in the NHS.
It includes case studies of how health and social care are improving quality and productivity, together with topics from the Cochrane Collaboration that may inform local initiatives, and links to tools and other resources to help support best practice.
Examples of recent initiatives submitted to the database include a scheme alcohol care teams to reduce acute hospital admissions and improve quality of care.
Provided by the British Society of Gastroenterology in collaboration with Bolton Foundation Trust, the scheme proposed a multidisciplinary team running across primary and secondary care to develop a coordinated alcohol treatment and prevention programme.
As part of the programme, Alcohol Care Teams would coordinate policies of care across acute departments.
Brief interventions and appropriate services would be provided within 24-hours of the detection of alcohol-related problems.
It is thought that implementing the scheme would improve quality through freeing up time and through reducing admissions and readmissions.
The specialist alcohol teams would also lead to patient problems being addressed more effectively and for future adverse events for individual patients to be reduced.
It is estimated that the scheme would save around £1.6 million for a district general hospital serving a population of 250,000. This equates to savings of £640,000 per 100,000 population.
There are now more than 120 examples of best practice quality and productivity examples on the QIPP collection, with more added each month.
If the examples in the collection were adopted by just 50% of eligible organisations, they have the potential to save the NHS over £1.9 billion.
