    This guideline sets out an antimicrobial prescribing strategy for acute otitis media (ear infection). It aims to limit antibiotic use and reduce antimicrobial resistance. Acute otitis media can be caused by viruses or bacteria. It lasts for about a week, and most children get better in 3 days without antibiotics. Serious complications are rare.

  2. Sore throat (acute): antimicrobial prescribing (NG84)

    This guideline sets out an antimicrobial prescribing strategy for acute sore throat. It aims to limit antibiotic use and reduce antimicrobial resistance. Acute sore throat is often caused by a virus, lasts for about a week, and most people get better without antibiotics. Withholding antibiotics rarely leads to complications.

  3. Secondary bacterial infection of eczema and other common skin conditions: antimicrobial prescribing (NG190)

    This guideline sets out an antimicrobial prescribing strategy for secondary bacterial infection of eczema and covers infection of other common skin conditions. It aims to optimise antibiotic use and reduce antibiotic resistance. The recommendations are for adults, young people and children aged 72 hours and over. They do not cover diagnosis.

    This guideline covers good practice for managing medicines in care homes. It aims to promote the safe and effective use of medicines in care homes by advising on processes for prescribing, handling and administering medicines. It also recommends how care and services relating to medicines should be provided to people living in care homes.

  8. Home care: delivering personal care and practical support to older people living in their own homes (NG21)

    This guideline covers the planning and delivery of person-centred care for older people living in their own homes (known as home care or domiciliary care). It aims to promote older people's independence and to ensure safe and consistently high quality home care services.

  9. Supporting adult carers (NG150)

    This guideline covers support for adults (aged 18 and over) who provide unpaid care for anyone aged 16 or over with health or social care needs. It aims to improve the lives of carers by helping health and social care practitioners identify people who are caring for someone and give them the right information and support. It covers carers’ assessments, practical, emotional and social support and training, and support for carers providing end of life care.

  10. People's experience in adult social care services: improving the experience of care and support for people using adult social care services (NG86)

    This guideline covers the care and support of adults receiving social care in their own homes, residential care and community settings. It aims to help people understand what care they can expect and to improve their experience by supporting them to make decisions about their care.

  11. Transition from children's to adults' services for young people using health or social care services (NG43)

    This guideline covers the period before, during and after a young person moves from children's to adults' services. It aims to help young people and their carers have a better experience of transition by improving the way it’s planned and carried out. It covers both health and social care.

  12. Safeguarding adults in care homes (NG189)

    This guideline covers keeping adults in care homes safe from abuse and neglect. It includes potential indicators of abuse and neglect by individuals or organisations, and covers the safeguarding process from when a concern is first identified through to section 42 safeguarding enquiries. There are recommendations on policy, training, and care home culture, to improve care home staff awareness of safeguarding and ensure people can report concerns when needed.

  13. Managing medicines for adults receiving social care in the community (NG67)

    This guideline covers medicines support for adults (aged 18 and over) who are receiving social care in the community. It aims to ensure that people who receive social care are supported to take and look after their medicines effectively and safely at home. It gives advice on assessing if people need help with managing their medicines, who should provide medicines support and how health and social care staff should work together.

  14. Transition between inpatient mental health settings and community or care home settings (NG53)

    This guideline covers the period before, during and after a person is admitted to, and discharged from, a mental health hospital. It aims to help people who use mental health services, and their families and carers, to have a better experience of transition by improving the way it’s planned and carried out.

  15. Controlled drugs: safe use and management (NG46)

    This guideline covers systems and processes for using and managing controlled drugs safely in all NHS settings except care homes. It aims to improve working practices to comply with legislation and have robust governance arrangements. It also aims to reduce the safety risks associated with controlled drugs.

  16. Child abuse and neglect (NG76)

    This guideline covers recognising and responding to abuse and neglect in children and young people aged under 18. It covers physical, sexual and emotional abuse, and neglect. The guideline aims to help anyone whose work brings them into contact with children and young people to spot signs of abuse and neglect and to know how to respond. It also supports practitioners who carry out assessments and provide early help and interventions to children, young people, parents and carers.

  17. Intermediate care including reablement (NG74)

    This guideline covers referral and assessment for intermediate care and how to deliver the service. Intermediate care is a multidisciplinary service that helps people to be as independent as possible. It provides support and rehabilitation to people at risk of hospital admission or who have been in hospital. It aims to ensure people transfer from hospital to the community in a timely way and to prevent unnecessary admissions to hospitals and residential care.

  18. Decision-making and mental capacity (NG108)

    This guideline covers decision-making in people 16 years and over who may lack capacity now or in the future. It aims to help health and social care practitioners support people to make their own decisions where they have the capacity to do so. It also helps practitioners to keep people who lack capacity at the centre of the decision-making process.

  19. Care and support of people growing older with learning disabilities (NG96)

    This guideline covers care and support for adults with learning disabilities as they grow older. It covers identifying changing needs, planning for the future, and delivering services including health, social care and housing. It aims to support people to access the services they need as they get older.

  20. Learning disabilities and behaviour that challenges: service design and delivery (NG93)

    This guideline covers services for children, young people and adults with a learning disability (or autism and a learning disability) and behaviour that challenges. It aims to promote a lifelong approach to supporting people and their families and carers, focusing on prevention and early intervention and minimising inpatient admissions.

  21. Social and emotional wellbeing in secondary education (PH20)

    This guideline covers interventions to support social and emotional wellbeing among young people aged 11–19 years who are in full-time education. It aims to promote good social, emotional and psychological health to protect young people against behavioural and health problems.

  22. Smoking prevention in schools (PH23)

    This guideline covers smoking prevention interventions that are delivered in schools or other educational institutions. It aims to prevent children and young people aged under 19 from taking up smoking.

  23. Mental wellbeing at work (PH22)

    This guideline covers how to create the right conditions to support mental wellbeing at work. The aim is to promote a culture of participation, equality and fairness in the workplace based on open communication and flexible working.

  24. Smoking: preventing uptake in children and young people (PH14)

    This guideline covers anti-smoking mass-media campaigns, for example, on TV, in newspapers and online. It also covers measures to prevent tobacco being sold to children and young people. The aim is to help prevent children and young people from taking up smoking.

  25. Cardiovascular disease: identifying and supporting people most at risk of dying early (PH15)

    This guideline covers the risk of early death from heart disease and other smoking-related illnesses. It aims to reduce the number of people who are disadvantaged dying prematurely by ensuring people have better access to flexible, well-coordinated treatment and support.

  26. Social and emotional wellbeing in primary education (PH12)

    This guideline covers approaches to promoting social and emotional wellbeing in children aged 4 to 11 years in primary education. It includes planning and delivering programmes and activities to help children develop social and emotional skills and wellbeing. It also covers identifying signs of anxiety or social and emotional problems in children and how to address them.

  27. Obesity: working with local communities (PH42)

    This guideline covers how local communities, with support from local organisations and networks, can help prevent people from becoming overweight or obese or help them lose weight. It aims to support sustainable and community-wide action to achieve this.

  28. Hepatitis B and C testing: people at risk of infection (PH43)

    This guideline covers raising awareness of and testing for hepatitis B and C infection. It aims to ensure that people at increased risk of hepatitis B and C infection are tested.

  29. Social and emotional wellbeing: early years (PH40)

    This guideline covers supporting the social and emotional wellbeing of vulnerable children under 5 through home visiting, childcare and early education. It aims to optimise care for young children who need extra support because they have or are at risk of social or emotional problems.
