    This guideline covers how community pharmacies can help maintain and improve people’s physical and mental health and wellbeing, including people with a long-term condition. It aims to encourage more people to use community pharmacies by integrating them within existing health and care pathways and ensuring they offer standard services and a consistent approach. It requires a collaborative approach from individual pharmacies and their representatives, local authorities and other commissioners.

    This guideline covers interventions in secondary and further education to prevent and reduce alcohol use among children and young people aged 11 up to and including 18. It also covers people aged 11 to 25 with special educational needs or disabilities in full-time education. It will also be relevant to children aged 11 in year 6 of primary school.

  3. Stop smoking interventions and services (NG92)

    This guideline covers stop smoking interventions and services delivered in primary care and community settings for everyone over the age of 12. It aims to ensure that everyone who smokes is advised and encouraged to stop and given the support they need. It emphasises the importance of targeting vulnerable groups who find smoking cessation hard or who smoke a lot.

  4. Physical activity and the environment (NG90)

    This guideline covers how to improve the physical environment to encourage and support physical activity. The aim is to increase the general population’s physical activity levels.

  5. Immunisations: reducing differences in uptake in under 19s (PH21)

    This guideline covers increasing immunisation uptake among children and young people aged under 19 years in groups and settings where immunisation coverage is low. It aims to improve access to immunisation services and increase timely immunisation of children and young people. It also aims to ensure babies born to mothers infected with hepatitis B are immunised.

  6. Vitamin D: supplement use in specific population groups (PH56)

    This guideline covers vitamin D supplement use. It aims to prevent vitamin D deficiency among specific population groups including infants and children aged under 4, pregnant and breastfeeding women, particularly teenagers and young women, people over 65, people who have low or no exposure to the sun and people with dark skin.

  7. Physical activity for children and young people (PH17)

    This guideline covers promoting physical activity for children and young people aged under 18 at home, preschool, school and in the community. It includes raising awareness of the benefits of physical activity, listening to what children and young people want, planning and providing spaces and facilities, and helping families build physical activity into their daily lives.

  8. Unintentional injuries: prevention strategies for under 15s (PH29)

    This guideline covers strategies, regulation, enforcement, surveillance and workforce development in relation to preventing unintentional injuries in the home, on the road and during outdoor play and leisure.

  9. Behaviour change: digital and mobile health interventions (NG183)

    This guideline covers interventions that use a digital or mobile platform to help people eat more healthily, become more active, stop smoking, reduce their alcohol intake or practise safer sex. The interventions include those delivered by text message, apps, wearable devices or the internet. The guideline only includes those that are delivered by the technology itself and not by healthcare professionals using technology to deliver interventions.

  10. Behaviour change: general approaches (PH6)

    This guideline covers a set of principles that can be used to help people change their behaviour. The aim is for practitioners to use these principles to encourage people to adopt a healthier lifestyle by, for example, stopping smoking, adopting a healthy diet and being more physically active.

  11. Oral health promotion: general dental practice (NG30)

    This guideline covers how general dental practice teams can convey advice about oral hygiene and the use of fluoride. It also covers diet, smoking, smokeless tobacco and alcohol intake.

  12. Sunlight exposure: risks and benefits (NG34)

    This guideline covers how to communicate the risks and benefits of natural sunlight exposure (specifically, the ultraviolet rays UVA and UVB) to help people understand why they may need to modify their behaviour to reduce their risk of skin cancer and vitamin D deficiency.

  13. Preventing excess weight gain (NG7)

    This guideline covers behaviours such as diet and physical activity to help children (after weaning), young people and adults maintain a healthy weight or help prevent excess weight gain. The aim is to prevent a range of diseases and conditions including cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes and improve mental wellbeing.

  14. Mental wellbeing in over 65s: occupational therapy and physical activity interventions (PH16)

    This guideline covers promoting mental wellbeing in people aged over 65. It focuses on practical support for everyday activities, based on occupational therapy principles and methods. This includes working with older people and their carers to agree what kind of support they need.

  15. Physical activity: exercise referral schemes (PH54)

    This guideline covers exercise referral schemes for people aged 19 and older, in particular, those who are inactive or sedentary. The aim is to encourage people to be physically active.

  16. Needle and syringe programmes (PH52)

    This guideline covers needle and syringe programmes for people (including those under 16) who inject drugs. The main aim is to reduce the transmission of viruses and other infections caused by sharing injecting equipment, such as HIV, hepatitis B and C. In turn, this will reduce the prevalence of blood-borne viruses and bacterial infections, so benefiting wider society.

  17. Healthcare-associated infections: prevention and control (PH36)

    This quality improvement guide was produced by NICE, in partnership with the Health Protection Agency (HPA). Its aim is twofold: to reduce the risk of harm from healthcare-associated infections for patients, staff and visitors; and to reduce the costs associated with preventable infection.

  18. Social and emotional wellbeing: early years (PH40)

    This guideline covers supporting the social and emotional wellbeing of vulnerable children under 5 through home visiting, childcare and early education. It aims to optimise care for young children who need extra support because they have or are at risk of social or emotional problems.

  19. Weight management: lifestyle services for overweight or obese children and young people (PH47)

    This guideline covers lifestyle weight management services for children and young people aged under 18 who are overweight or obese. It advises how to deliver effective weight management programmes that support children and young people to change their lifestyle and manage their weight.

  20. Unintentional injuries in the home: interventions for under 15s (PH30)

    This guideline covers home safety assessments, supplying and installing safety equipment and providing education and advice. It aims to prevent unintentional injuries among all children and young people aged under 15 but, in particular, those living in disadvantaged circumstances.

  21. Sexually transmitted infections and under-18 conceptions: prevention (PH3)

    This guideline covers one-to-one interventions to prevent sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and under-18 conceptions. The aim is to reduce the transmission of chlamydia and other STIs, including HIV, and reduce the rate of pregnancies among women aged under 18.

  22. Maternal and child nutrition (PH11)

    This guideline covers the nutrition of pregnant women, including women who are planning to become pregnant, mothers and other carers of children aged under 5 and their children. In particular, it aims to address disparities in the nutrition of low-income and other disadvantaged groups compared with the general population.
