The Mental Health Champions Development Programme was a structured education programme The primary aims behind this programme were to improve the provision of care for individuals with mental health problems using Portsmouth Hospitals Trust (PHT) services and to support staff through a structured education programme in managing people with mental health problems. The programme has been devised and delivered by collaborative working between Portsmouth Hospitals Trust and Portsmouth City teaching Primary Care Trust.

Recommendations from SHA following local untoward events NICE guidance implementation - CG16 Better Services for people who self-harm project findings - national quality improvement programme hosted by the Royal College of Psychiatrists, recommendations from this
1. Improvement of patient care evidenced by reflections on actions by those undertaking the course 2. Staff confidence and knowledge greatly improved throughout - evidenced by objective and subjective evaluation 3. Continued implementation of risk assessment tool to aid in referral to mental health patients to services in a timely fashion and pathway for mental health patients clarified
Applicants initial application bid At the beginning of the course the champions were asked to rate their progress with regards to knowledge, attitude and confidence. This was repeated at the six month stage and at the end of the programme.
