Description:
Obesity is a chronic condition characterised by excess body fat. People living with obesity are at an increased risk of developing other health conditions such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, atherosclerosis, hypertension, dyslipidaemia, stroke and some types of cancer. It is a growing public health concern in the England, with nearly two thirds of people currently living with overweight and obesity. Multidisciplinary weight management services support the management and maintenance of weight loss through behavioural and lifestyle changes. These services can be used alone, or alongside weight management medicines. But provision varies across England and Wales, and many people who may benefit from these services do not currently have access. Digital technologies for delivering multidisciplinary weight management services have the potential to improve access to services, reduce demand on in-person services, and improve clinical outcomes, particularly for people without local access or on waiting lists. In March 2024, NICE recommended the use of 9 technologies for delivering multidisciplinary weight management services in the NHS while more evidence is generated. Since the guidance was published, there have been significant changes to obesity treatment pathways and service models. So, this topic has been selected to be updated to appropriately reflect these changes.
