The procedure

The procedure

The procedure is carried out with the patient under local or general anaesthesia. A chemotherapy drug is given by injection either into a vein or directly into a tumour. Short, powerful pulses of electricity are then applied to the tumour using electrodes. The electrical energy opens pores in the cells, allowing the chemotherapy drug to enter the cells and have a more damaging effect on the tumour.
