This quality standard covers identifying and managing atrial fibrillation (including paroxysmal, persistent and permanent atrial fibrillation, and atrial flutter) in adults (aged 18 and over). It describes high-quality care in priority areas for improvement.

In February 2018, the source guidance and definitions for statement 6 were amended to reflect the updated NICE diagnostics guidance on self-monitoring coagulation status using point-of-care coagulometers (the CoaguChek XS system).

Keeping quality standards up to date

We checked this quality standard in 2017. The source guidance on atrial fibrillation is being updated and we are assessing what changes will need to be made to the quality standard.
