Review proposal consultation
Review proposal consultation
The NICE Centre for Guidelines is currently conducting a partial update of NICE guideline 28 (NG28) Type 2 diabetes in adults: management. NICE is updating our recommendations on drug therapy. The update will be published on 18 February 2026.
The recommendations in the update to NG28 are inconsistent with the technology appraisals which cover the management of type 2 diabetes. This inconsistency needs to be resolved so that NICE can produce useful and usable recommendations.
We propose that an update of the technology appraisal guidance should be planned into the appraisal work programme. The update would be conducted through a new, proportionate decision-making process.
Planned updates to the TAs
NICE proposes that the following technology appraisals should be updated:
- TA315: Canagliflozin in combination therapy for treating type 2 diabetes
- TA336: Empagliflozin in combination therapy for treating type 2 diabetes
- TA572: Ertugliflozin as monotherapy or with metformin for treating type 2 diabetes
The proposed updated recommendations will align with the recommendations made by the committee in NG28.
NICE proposes that the following technology appraisals will be withdrawn:
- TA288: Dapagliflozin in combination therapy for treating type 2 diabetes
- TA390: Canagliflozin, dapagliflozin and empagliflozin as monotherapies for treating type 2 diabetes
- TA418: Dapagliflozin in triple therapy for treating type 2 diabetes
- TA583: Ertugliflozin with metformin and a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitor for treating type 2 diabetes
