Quality standard

This quality standard covers care and support and services for children, young people and adults with a learning disability (or a learning disability and autism) and behaviour that challenges, and their families and carers. It describes high quality care in priority areas for improvement.

It does not cover preventing, assessing and managing mental health problems in people with a learning disability or additional care and support needs of people growing older with a learning disability. These areas are covered by other published quality standards.

In July 2019 this quality standard was updated to add 4 new statements, update 1 statement and amend 1 statement. For more information see update information.

NICE has produced information for the public and EasyRead versions about this quality standard and its source guidance. See:

How to use NICE quality standards and how we develop them

Quality standards help you improve the quality of care you provide or commission. They apply in England and Wales (see the UK government website and Welsh government website). Decisions on how they apply in Scotland and Northern Ireland are made by ministers in the Scottish government and Northern Ireland Executive.

Find out how to use quality standards and how we develop them. We check our quality standards every August to make sure they are up to date.
