2 Who the guideline is for and equality considerations

2.1 Who the guideline is for

    This guideline is for:

    • healthcare professionals working in primary, secondary and tertiary care

    • cancer alliances

    • commissioners of metastatic spinal cord preventative, diagnostic and treatment services (including clinical commissioning groups and NHS England specialised commissioning)

    • voluntary sector organisations working with people with suspected or diagnosed metastatic spinal cord compression

    • healthcare professionals working in palliative care services

    • healthcare professionals working in hospices

    • people with suspected or diagnosed metastatic spinal cord compression, their families and carers

NICE guidelines cover health and care in England. Decisions on how they apply in other UK countries are made by ministers in the Welsh Government, Scottish Government, and Northern Ireland Executive.

    2.2 Equality considerations

NICE has carried out an equality impact assessment during scoping. The assessment:

    • lists equality issues identified, and how they have been addressed

    • explains why any groups are excluded from the scope.

There are a number of equality issues related to cancer, as shown by data from Cancer Research UK. For example, the data from 2015 to 2017 indicate that mortality is higher in men than in women and is also higher in more socioeconomic deprived areas of the country.
