Age-related macular degeneration is a progressive condition, typically affecting people aged over 55, in which the macula becomes damaged, causing the vision to become blurred or distorted.
It was estimated that in 2020 in the UK, 340,000 people had advanced dry AMD (also known as geographic atrophy), and 339,000 people had wet AMD (also known as neovascular AMD). By 2050, there is expected to be 720,000 people with advanced dry AMD and 683,000 people with wet AMD in the UK (NICE Clinical Knowledge Summary, 2025).
